Wait. Somewhere it was mentioned
If you are gonna use it you have to follow the rules.
Now we are bending the pipe and the rules.
I think bending the rules is unavoidable.
In most jobs, there is a "yeah, but".
And fixing the "yeah, buts..." is what
we are paid to do as professionals.
Use our mental control when the round peg doesn't fit in the square hole.
It seems to me, there will always be grey areas. Some who
see black-and-white, have reason and emotion to disagree
with that statement. Some will not publicly admit or discuss
grey areas in a public forum and choose to counsel off line.
That is fine--- it is a common business practice to seek privacy
on delicate (perhaps grey) subjects.
This forum helps me most when the debate is open. At the
very real and accepted risk of going personal....
I will take my shots to get a shot at a real answer to a grey question.
It is understood that some feel exposed when talking about grey
areas, because there is a tendency for some AHJ's to think
"because it has been talked about, it must have already been done."
That is quite an incorrect assumption. Guilty before all the evidence is
in...
is just bad business, and one the AHJ should remember when dealing
with listed products they don't like. It is part of the AHJ job to remain
fair
and open, every day. That is why they get all the holidays.
If we don't like a system because it introduces difficulties in
verifying proper function, that is a valid and practical concern, but we
don't
want to drive a good contractor onto the ropes just because ... Similarly,
if we have a valid and practical reason for hanging moderate amounts of
plastic from sprinkler pipe [and that is NOT a sarcastic remark], do it.
I think there are plenty of grey areas, where the rules are bent with good
intent,
and these areas are often best solved with open debate. That is because
someone's
grey area is another persons' no-go zone. In openly debating these areas,
we
allow ourselves more experience to make decisions with. Private counsel
is swell; so too is open debate of an issue involving compromise of
black-and-white rules. Just because it is talked about, does not mean it
has
been done-- this forum is for think'n. Usually, a group decision
from open debate fleshes out the most reasonable solution.
A group decision, however, does not mean that everyone is happy, just
that the decision was debated adequately.
