Steve:

Here in the Midwest, the BOCA Basic Building Code, 1955 edition, had numerous
occupancies wherein sprinklers were required.  That code also permitted a 200%
increase in the allowed area of a building of light to moderate fire load if
protected with sprinklers.  I will head up to the attic sometime tomorrow and
dig out my older building codes.  I know I have a 1940 UBC that I can check,
but I also have the old NBFU building codes back to ~1920.

Trusting to memory, the Marks' Mech Engrs Handbook from ~1905, which is also up
in the attic, recommended sprinklers in some occupancies, citing there success
at controlling or extinguishing fires.

And of course, the first edition of the Fire Protection Handbook in 1896 cited
the extraordinary success rate of sprinklers.

Does anyone know when the first provisions for sprinklers (to any
extent) appeared in the building or fire code(s)?
