David et al:

Greeting from Santa Fe (NM)...Sorry, David, I do not have access to
documents regarding NAHB position on Smoke Detectors circa early 1970's - but I
believe I can "paraphrase", to wit: 1) They are EXPENSIVE!! 2) They are
unsightly!!! 3) New homes don't BURN!
4) The cost will hurt new home sales...The same rhetoric they are using
today with residential fire sprinklers...Many do not remember that this all
started during the NIXON Administration with the Presidential Committee on Fire
in America ("America Burning") when we were losing some 1,000 to 1,200
people per MONTH in home fires. The Report to the President has three
recommendations that stand out even today - 1) Installation of smoke detectors,
2)
Education and 3) Residential Fire Sprinklers. That was almost FORTY years ago.

It appears there is still much work to be done to get this implemented. It
appears the NAHB are the only ones "in the know" that fire sprinklers aren't
wanted or needed?? Some things never change...

Regards to all.
