But to further the discussion there is something related that I never got logic around. I know logic and code don't always mix.
Nearly any wall, even with unrated penetrations (and maybe even uncovered openings), suffices for the purpose of not extending the protection scheme across the wall but unless it's LH or OH and has rated walls and closers (OH) you can't use room design method. Just seems odd to me we can have a small HPS with a 0.6 density next to the office and have LH in the office on the other side of the wall but when calc'ing maybe pick up LH heads on the 0.6 density depending on the size and configuration to get the 2000 sq.ft., 53.66' along the BL. But even in the LH and OH scenario you have a supply storage room in an office that is OH. Most of the time these don't have self closers on the door thus the hallway head maybe 3' from the storage head the hall is LH and the closet OH in the same calc. Yeah it doesn't matter too much in the calc's usually. It just seems odd to me we can't stop more calc's at the wall more often like we can stop the protection scheme. Chris Cahill, P.E. The appendix gives a storage example. My question is: Is the spacing of the more demanding basis also to be extended that 15 ft for an OH scenario into a LH area through non rated walls? In other words, do I have to protect light hazard corridors or bathrooms with 130 sq ft max sprinkler spacing since they are within 15 ft of mechanical, janitor, and recycling rooms? It seems like overkill to me to have to space heads in a portion of a corridor or bathroom at 130 sq ft unless there are rated walls separating them from the other hazards. Thoughts?
