Standard sidewall sprinklers are only allowed under smooth, flat ceilings. (NFPA 13 8.4.2--2002 edition.) Although I see them all the time under open wood framing. But that doesn't make it right. You have an obligation to point out to the building owner that the existing system is not correct and install the new addition correctly. IMO.
