Most politicians have little or no technical knowledge and many are just not very smart at all when it comes to practical applications. So it stands to reason that they would believe that if you add $5000 to a $150,000 house, no one will ever be able to afford a new house, ever! They would never reason that the buyer who is looking at that $150K house is going to probably add another $10-$20K of upgrades in counter tops, fixtures, upgraded appliances, etc.
