QR equals NO draft curtain at the protection split. Don't forget the plus 15'
before you put the DC in. But some times a DC is cheaper or free if you can
split at a deep enough beam.

Subject: ESFR draft curtains

O.K., I thought that this had been fully vetted out but I have gone back
through the archives and have looked at the building codes and the standard and
I am still not totally convinced. If we use ESFR's in the High Piled Storage
area ( appx 20,000ft of the 60,000 ft warehouse) do we have to have a draft
curtain to separate the ESFR's from the control mode sprinklers? NFPA 2007
8.4.6.4.1 says "When ESFR sprinklers are installed adjacent to sprinkler
systems with standard response sprinklers, a draft curtain of non combustible
construction and at least 2' in depth shall be required to separate the two
areas." Seems pretty straight forward however the question that has come up is
what if quick response sprinklers are used adjacent to the ESFR's?? Would the
need for the draft curtains to go away assuming that the qr's will activate
before the ESFR's?? The standard specifically references ".....standard
response sprinklers..." I am trying to make sure that I have not been outs
marted and my competition is using qr sprinklers in the non HPS areas where we
bid to maintain the ESFR heads throughout to eliminate the need for draft
curtains. Thanks for the help as always.
