I also sent this to NFPA but I really need a quicker answer if possible.
We have an attic constructed with wood trusses that has plywood or other combustible material attached to the bottom of the trusses with a noncombustible ceiling hanging below the plywood thereby forming a combustible concealed space that is less than 36" in depth - does 8.15.1.6 apply in this case and the listed sprinklers are required in the lower concealed space?
It is unclear to me that if the combustible space is unobstructed and flat if the specially listed heads are required.
Also, what about a combustible concealed space that is less than 2in on 12in and is sloped such that at the high end the space is larger than 36" between the upper and lower chord, but the lower end of the space is less than 36" between the upper and lower chord?
Are we to: 1) average the depth of the space and use the sprinklers that would be appropriate based on the resulting average? 2) Use SSU sprinklers where the space is larger than 36" as described in 8.15.1.6 and use specially listed sprinklers when the depth of the space reduces to less than 36" as described in 8.15.1.6?
