We looked into that but the space above is a mechanical space and the pipe
would create access problems, so we had to X that idea.

Could you run the piping above the ceiling and then use stainless drops into
the space?

NO SS is not out of the question, just looking for any viable options as in
every case SS for process makes money, SS for sprinklers is an overhead cost.
Clients want cheap for overhead costed systems, they don't care as much what
they spend for systems that make money.

This is not a kitchen, but an industrial processing plant. Plenty of
combustible commodities going into the mix in various phases of production.
Final product not combustible. OH would be appropriate for the hazard and is
agreed upon by Underwriter as well. LH, not a chance.

Most likely we will be using SS.

So the process piping is SS but that won't work for the sprinkler pipe?

I've done a couple SS jobs in small areas and they weren't bad. $ for sure but
not as bad as I originally would have guessed.

As far as plastic I think some place it was mentioned obstructed construction.
That would scare me a bit. Smooth clg would be better. Tighten up spacing for
sure. Many of the plastic fire testing when the pipe 'melted' a fine spray was
created and suppressed the test fire. Or so I was told. Think linear
suppression system. So it not a complete rupture type failure.

And are we really in agreement a commercial/industrial kitchen is OH.
Seriously everything is metal with usually limited ingredients and finished
products. Now a few plastic pallets seals the OH but could be a case around
where LH is appropriate. The plastic pipe then becomes more acceptable.

I also believe plastic is semi-common in acid dip tank areas.

And finally the chemical plant where they make and bottle the stuff has solved
this problem. I'd be very comfortable using what they use for process piping
as long as it's pressure appropriate and metallic.

FWIW, In the early to mid 80's, the company I was working for was
asked to look at a room with an extremely corrosive environment (I
believe OH2 occupancy). Galvanized pipe would rot in approximately 9
months. We were asked for a solution. This new stuff had come on the
market called CPVC. Although it was not approved for that occupancy,
we got the manufacturer and AHJ's to sign off on using it. We figured
the worst that could happen is that it ate away and we would have to
replace it again in a few months. Although the occupants of that mill
are long gone, the pipe survived without damage and is still in
service. Heads were wax coated. Probably not applicable nor could get
everyone to sign off, but it is food for thought.
