Agree with Craig - what does it matter when it came in? It was before
the 80's though, as I started in '81 and have always sprinklered coolers
and freezers.

NFPA 13 does not require sprinklers in buildings - the building code
requires sprinklers or not. When a building is required to be
sprinklered, it is to be done in accordance with the referenced
standard, i.e. NFPA 13 of a certain year of issue. So, NFPA 13 says
(and has for several cycles), "Sprinkler all areas of the building but
for these itemized allowable exceptions ..." and then goes on to list
in articulate detail those conditions where sprinklers may be omitted.
Since coolers and freezers aren't on the list of exceptions, you
sprinkler them, period.

Subject: Walk-in Type Freezers & Coolers

NFPA's Formal Interpretation 78-6 says that walk-in type
freezers/coolers require sprinklers because they are part of the
premises. NFPA 13 requires that sprinklers be installed throughout the
premises in accordance with Section 4-1.1. Does anyone know when this
became an NFPA requirement? I have heard the mid 80s mentioned. We have
a building owner in a tussle with the AHJ.

Thanks,
