Sprinklers extinguished a stove fire at Paquin Tower last night. The fire
caused an estimated $10,000 in damage.

Firefighters were called at 8:49 p.m. to the public housing complex at 1201
Paquin St. when an automatic fire alarm was activated. Residents were being
evacuated and called 911 to report smoke and water coming from Apartment
408, which was not occupied at the time.

A sprinkler head in the apartment activated in response to a fire on the
stove that resulted from unattended cooking, according to a fire department
news release. The kitchen sustained minor fire and smoke damage, but no one
was injured.

Fire crews helped Columbia Housing Authority staff mop up water afterward.

The fire follows a similar incident last week in which automatic sprinklers
quickly put out a fire in a hotel room at the Holiday Inn Select on I-70
Drive S.W.
