Direct property loss due to fires in the U.S., regardless of the cause, was
estimated at $11.3 billion for 2006. That year, 3,245 civilians lost their
lives as the result of fire, according to the NFPA.

In 2006 there were a total of 524,000 structure fires in the U.S, 412,500 of
those were residential fires. The ISO’s Property Claim Services estimates
that fire losses associated with homeowners insurance claims (including FAIR
Plans) accounted for 43 percent of total fire losses in 2006.

I'm sure with a little effort and search of NFPA and ISO sites more current
info is available.(If my math is right about 4.86 Billion in 2006 using
total from NFPA and 43% from ISO.)

Subject: RE: $7b/yr rebuild market

Where did the header for this message come from? Is the home rebuilding
market really &7 Billion a year? I would like to have proof of the size of
the rebuild market.

The HBA is not concerned about the safety of the general public, they want
to make sure they protect their recurring revenue stream. The HBA has a
vested interest in homes burning down.

Without sprinklers the home burns to the ground and they get a complete
rebuild.
With sprinklers typically you get the restoration team to clean up, maybe
some new carpet, a few pieces of drywall and paint, this is a home remodeler
job.

Sprinklers don't price people out of a house. If a particular market segment
only supports $200,000 houses then that's the price they will sell for.
Without sprinklers they will have granite counter tops or hardwood floors or
vaulted ceilings. With sprinklers they will have Formica counters or carpet.
They will sell for $200,000 either way.

The site below allows you to look at the most common and most expensive
insurance claims in residential occupancies by zip code. I put in all the
zip codes around me and the most common claim is usually weather, the most
expensive is always fire.

http://www.allstate.com/landingpages/common_and_costly_claims.aspx

I know most insurance companies will offer up to a 10% discount for
sprinklers but I think we need to work with the insurance companies more to
point out how much money they could save if they required sprinklers in new
homes before they would insure them.

We also need to keep pointing out the hypocrisy and greed of the HBA.

mike
