This backflow thing is always so tragic, humorous, and illogical to
me. Tragic because it's so costly. Humorous because I'm not sure what
these things are actually supposed to do the way the rules are
applied. The water guys are charged with providing, safe, clean and
"pleasing" water. Health issues from sprinklers have been about a
dozen in a hundred years and I'd argue that most of them were
questionable or minor. Clean and pleasing issues are about the same.
Since the risk is low and the test can only tell you the device is
working at the time the gauge is attached to it not predict what will
happen when you re-open the valves, the mostly likely time to stir up
debris and fouled the seal, what is the value over a ACV that can be
constantly monitored 24/7 without costly test gear? And the illogic is
if you're so afraid of your own water becoming a risk because it's
sitting around in a pipe, which most of theirs pretty much is until a
hydrant is opened, that you need an RP then why don't they just up the
anti and require a break tank? Stupid is as stupid does.
