Let's see., (2002 edt.)

14.4.1.2 "Pipe sizes shall be no less than 1" nominal for ferrous piping and ¾" nominal for copper tubing or nonmetallic piping listed for fire sprinkler service."

As nipple is commonly associated with piping less than 12", perhaps calling it a brass nipple is not proper.

So for fittings,

6.4.1
"Fittings used in sprinkler systems shall meet or exceed the standards in Table 6.4.1 or be in accordance with 6.4.2 or 6.4.3"

No mention of brass. Also, fittings size is dictated by pipe size, so see above. The only mention of ½" is in 8.14.19 under retro-fit applications.

Side note: Those still a little unsure of the "standard weight" term applying to pipe with a certain wall thickness can see 6.4.4 as the terms are used there describing weight class of fittings.

I would say proceed carefully...,

Subject: Re: Sprinkler head extension nipples

Is there anything that prevents them from being used? They are not
ferrous...I don't know.

Are the short brass nipples used to extend sprinkler head drops that have
been cut incorrectly legal in any application other than 13R anymore? I've seen some listed as 13R only and I can't find any evidence to support their use in any other flavor of 13? NFPA 13 2001 would be my primary concern if
someone can point me to something supporting yes or no on using them or if
there is a product available that is appropriate for use in a 13 system.
