I have a situation which seems to be occurring frequently now. In unfinished
basements, wood joist construction, I have a large amount of ductwork. The
ducts are causing numerous obstructions. It seems a little unrealistic to be
placing residential pendents in every little pocket which is "obstructed" if
following the letter of the code. During the survey, it occurred to me &
another workmate that if approached from a performance based standpoint, a good
option would be to use quick response uprights with reasonable head spacing. I
understand that this is not really addressed in 13-D. I feel however that the
whole ("positioned in a manner that anticipates future installation of a
finished ceiling" is a somewhat optimistic & unrealistic approach & left open
to pretty wide interpretations. Some additional factors that went into my think:
.Some of the ducts hang down from the ceiling & allow spray to go over the top
.At this unfinished stage, the only walls are the foundation walls & this is
not a living space so wall wetting probably isn't a big issue
. I have enough water to drive the 2 uprights at a .10 density up to about 250
sq. ft. each
. The system would lend itself well to future alterations
I realize I may have a battle on my hand trying to get this thru the AHJ, but,
I would like to hear opinions on this topic and/or other ideas.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Michael G. Haley
