who knows chris? 15 max btwn heads, 1 hngr per head=15 max btwn hngrs? 13 is a standard-- you ever had a STANDARD JOB? standard vs. performance is mutually exclusive. 13 is the result of engineering, broken down in to tables of 'best fit', i.e., ok, lots of 16" inch beams, plus 6"= 22 max, etc. even if "performance" is the way of the future, 13 will not reflect that any more than 13-1896, until we stop calling anything standard.

Anyone want to theorize or are old enough to know why the limit of 15' on hanger spacing? Got a process piping rack the sprinkler mains will be on (no choice, it's complicated) where they want to go 20' between. I know there are engineering outs in 13 but when the process engineer asked why all I had was I didn't write the code. I don't mind that answer but the question intrigued me. Structurally holding the weight shouldn't be a problem or at least can be calculated. Thought maybe the couplings might be a limiting factor, but then the limit is the same for all schedules of pipe and joining methods and sizes from 1.5" to 8" so it has the smell of it was in the 1896 edition and no one every figured out how to make a buck off changing the limits as we developed new pipe and joints so it remains.
