Gentlemen: In nearly forty years, I've never been sued over an NFPA-25 inspection - and, I've never had to have one of my Mechanical or FPE's escourt me on a sprinkler system inspection...Nor do I take one of our three law firms along. I'm just a lowly, licensed sprinkler journeyman who has completed a five-year indentured sprinkler apprenticeship.
Without consulting my PE's or attorneys, here's what I believe: (back to my original UL/FM submission) - I am not aware of any 'listed' or 'approved' so-called heat collector (nor has anyone else cited one in this discussion). That said, I am looking at NFPA-25 (2011 edition), and, with my feeble ability to read and comprehend, it says: Pipe and Fittings. "Sprinkler piping shall not be subjected to to external loads by materials either resting on the pipe or hung from the pipe". Now, if christmas decorations, electrical wiring, string and everything else is forbidden, I'm going to really go out on a limb here and say - as a non-PE, that attaching a "heat collector" to any part of the sprinkler system is, in fact, subjecting my sprinkler pipe to external loads. It violates the wording and spirit of NFPA-25, period. If anyone threatens to sue you - you tell them Jerry said it is a violation and let them come after me. This seems pretty straight forward to me gentlemen - even an old (60 year old) sprinklerfitter who received his first paycheck from Grinnell back in 1964. Do the math...
