If these are canopies, rather than inset entries, I would refer to the rules
for overhangs exceeding 4'-0" of combustible construction. Refer to NFPA
13, 2010; A.8.15.7.1. It mentions multi-story apartments specifically in
the last part of the commentary, though it seems to incline toward
'balconies'. The two things that come to mind are the definition of "porch"
in the code that you are governed by, and the nature of the "canopy" itself.
I'm assuming combustible construction for the purpose of this discussion.
The pivotal element to this seems to be combustible vs. non-combustible
construction, not to mention the intended use. In your case, it's an
entry/egress. I personally would err on the side of covering it.

What are the odds there will be BBQ/grills located beneath them?

Subject: 13R covered entrance
I am working on a project with several apartment buildings that are to
be protected per NFPA 13R. Each of the units (6-8 per building) have
entrances with oversized (roughly 9'-6" x 5'-0") canopies over them. The
platform for the entrance of 2 or 3 steps above grade. It falls under
the dictionary definition of a porch. 13R (2002) section 6.8.4 excludes
requirements for sprinklers for "porches, balconies, corridors and
stairs that are open and attached". The CT Fire Safety Code, which
roughly follows the ICC, reinstates the requirements for balconies and
ground floor patios, but does not mention porches. The obvious question
here is sprinkler or not. 13R does not require porches to be sprinklered
and the CFSC (ICC) does not mention them in their reinstatement, so I
would think they could be excluded by definition. However, this is also
an egress, so does that change the issue? What say ye?
