Almost right;

Grunau Sprinkler was a division of Grunau Mechanical located in Milwaukee WI.
Grunau purchased Vogel Sprinkler in 1969 and began manufacturing sprinklers for
their own use, and for sale to contractors. The sale to contractors was not
going well, after all what contractor wants to buy from their competitor. In
1983 Grunau bought the Star name and patents from the Chmetron Corporation then
combined the best of the Star and Grunau product lines and began manufactured
them under the Star name (still a wholly owned subsidiary of Grunau). TYCO
bought Star in the mid 90's and eventually folded the Star, Central and Gem
lines into TYCO. The only sprinklers from the old Star / Grunau line still
being manufactured are the PH2 Institutional Pendent and PH5 Institutional
Horizontal Sidewall albeit with a different activating mechanism.

Grunau as I recall was a mfg. and a contractor. Star purchased the product line
and Grunau remained a contractor. I think there were family ties with the two
firms. They had a full line of products.

Star, Central and the Gem (Grinnell) line all now fall under what is now Tyco.
Over the years the product lines became one product line. For some time each
product was sold through different channels.

Efficiencies of scale, evaporation of the licensees programs (ask an old timer)
the merger of independent distribution into National chains changed the fire
sprinkler industry into what we have today.

Not in a bad way just a more open market.

Sorry rambling!
