We're essentially running workstations built as servers. One of our Revit workstations as an individual quad-core Xeon processor running at 3.4GHz; one has a single 8-core 3.1GHz processor; another has dual quad-core 3.1GHz chips. Windows 7 boots in, like, 3 seconds but it still takes a few minutes to load in a regenerate a fat Revit model. And we have rock and roll video cards in all of our machines. Revit, schmevit - if you're a gamer, or addicted to on-line porn, these chips are the BOMB.
The issues with Revit are pretty much as stated already - lack of content with engineering attributes, and the raw file size, which is what slows it down. Theoretically, in the future we should be able to easily draw in 3D, calc', list, print out fab' sheets, catalogue and print out ITM worksheets, etc., etc. But there simply isn't enough content out there yet, nor accessory programs written, to do any of those things effectively. We're providing piping models on certain projects because clients are insisting, but we still draw the vast majority of our construction documents in AutoCad. They will say: If you are drawing a pipe why not just draw it in the right spot to begin with? Basically it's a selling point. Google Revit and wall street journal. Here's one of my frustrations: We are currently working on 400,000 sq.ft. hospital addition. An hour each day is wasted just loading the model. It takes 20 minutes to load the model. Once in the morning, then Autodesk recommends rebooting your machine at least twice during the day to stay crash free.
