By the forum's standards I'm probably wet behind the ears. I started in the
business in 1996 while still in high school, on the board, learned from an old
Automatic employee, Richard Coustillac. He worked in the same office Clyde
Wood wrote the hydraulics book in. From then to now I've had a couple years
out for a career change, and a year or so of unemployment, so probably
somewhere nearing 14 years of experience. I got my level IV shortly after I
hit 10 years. My experience has been that the business has transitioned
somewhat to young CAD jockeys such as I was being a commodity that comes and
goes with the economy (economy gets bad they're last in first out and they find
a new direction). Also big sales commisions, which seem to be a bygone perk
drew a lot of young "hotshots" out of design up until relatively recently at
least. And lastly I think "design management" and "training" didn't keep up
for a number of reasons so a lot of "line and circle drawers" came and w
ent that never learned enough to be an autonomous designer or break into other
areas of the business. But I'm sure other markets are different?

Subject: longevity in business - list participants

List:

Recent comments have left me wondering: Are participants on forum skewed
towards the multi-decade experience vs. relatively new to the business?

Does this reflect design offices? In the past was there some marked expansion
in sprinkler business, then leveling off, with cyclical ups and downs, but not
net increase?
