i am working on a project where there are two rectangular rooms with high
ceilings surrounded by corridors with 8 ft ceilings. For the sake of this
discussion, assume the rectangular dimensions are 30 ft x 70 ft. The system has
a 3" main running on one of the long dimensions and a 1-1/2" loop around the
perimeter corridors. The sprinklers for the high ceiling rooms are fed off the
30 ft sides. The only other sprinklers fed from the 1-1/2" are those for the
corridor ceilings.

For figuring seismic, the two pieces of 1-1/2" are considered cross mains by
definition because they feed branch lines. However, since the 1-1/2" along the
70ft leg only includes sprinklers on swing joints are fed from it, can it be
considered a branch line?
