You need to me 3x the dimension of the obstruction, away from the
obstruction up to a max of 24". Example 1, a 3" pipe column in the room.
You need to be a minimum of 9" away from the obstruction. Example 2 would
be a 12" square column in the room. Your sprinkler will need to be 24" away
in this case because 3 x 12 = 36 but you are only required to be at least
24" away. Say its' a 26" square column, then you need to be the minimum
distance of 24" away from the obstruction. If you are further away, all the
better.

Subject: Fwd: 3 Times Rule

> I'm looking in the 2007 Edition 8.6.5.2.1.3 and what does it mean by "The
maximum clear distance required shall be 24 in. In accordance with Figure
8.6.5.2.1.3."?

> Does that mean that if the 3x is more than 24" you can't use the rule or
even if it's bigger you ONLY need to be 24" from it?

> I have 12" diameter spiral duct exposed and trying to tell the field guys
how far to be from it. So I haven't got confirmation if it's less than 18"
below yet but treating it was worst case. This project is light hazard so
might be a non issue, especially if it's more than 18" below.
