Reza:

I'm going respond in reverse order,

2) Small hose connections (1.5") as defined and described in NFPA 13 are NOT
Class II standpipes and it says as much (or used to) in the standard. I'm at
home and don't have an NFPA 13 handy for reference.

1) Given that you have a Class III standpipe requirement (presumably from the
applicable code), then you base the design of that system on NFPA 14. In a
sprinklered building you have two choices: you can design completely separate
sprinkler and standpipe systems or you can design a combined system. Both
options are going to be in accordance with applicable sections of 13 and 14.
NFPA 14 references sprinkler connections off of standpipe systems but 13 does
NOT reference standpipe connections off of sprinkler systems, only the small
hose connections as mentioned in #2 above. So if you want a combined system,
the overarching requirements for distribution piping are in 14, not 13. 14
requires that every sprinkler connection to a standpipe be furnished with a
check valve and control valve; downstream of any such connection you
design/install sprinklers per NFPA 13.

The foregoing is my opinion only and does not represent any other opinion or
interpretation of or by the NFPA 14 Technical Committee.

Subject: Connecting Class III Stand Pipe to Sprinkler?

Hi All,
I have two questions:

1- In a 6 story residential building that I have Class III standpipes with a
single 2½ inch outlet and a 1½ inch reducer connected to 1½ inch hose stations.
While NFPA 13 allows 1½ inch hose stations to be directly connected to
sprinkler systems, can I connect my Class III standpipe system to sprinkler
system?

2- NFPA 13 allows 1½ inch hose stations to be directly connected to sprinkler
systems, are these classified as Class II standpipe system? if yes, why there
is no requirements in NFPA 13 for 65 psi outlet pressure as stated in NFPA 14?

Thanks & Regards,
Reza
