Not necessarily. A grid does not have to have all of the branch piping
the same. Can you put the branch lines in that area as say 2" and the
others as say 1ΒΌ" if it will calc out?

That's what my plan is, but I am being pushed to do a grid system and a grid
would put the remote area at the ceiling pocket, where a tree system would
allow me to do 2 sets of calcs and reduce pipe sizes where the ceilings are
only 13'.

Why not do two calculations? Do one with 1500 sq ft in the area of the 28'
ceiling. Do another for the 13' ceilings and call it good.

Good afternoon everyone,
Let's say that you have a ceiling elevation of 13'-0 and all other requirements
for ceiling reduction are met, no problem. Now let's add a ceiling pocket that
jumps up to 28'-0, it is located about 100' away from the original remote area.
Let's not worry about the size of the pocket at this point. It is possible that
the elevation of the ceiling pocket would cause the remote area to move to the
area of the pocket and due to the elevation being (>20') no area reduction
would be allowed and multiple sets of calculations may be needed for this floor. I
will also add that the floor is a shell and it is one big open floor plan, there
is nothing separating the (28') ceiling pockets from the rest of the floor. Here
is the question:
Can you still use the area reduction for the original design area since the
ceiling in that area is (<20')?
