A situation that's new to me, I'd like to verify design criteria before
proceeding:

I'm working on a multi-story building with internal stairways. Applicable
building code is IBC (2012). The architect has elected to not enclose the
4th floor (top floor) of one of the stairs and is citing IBC section 1009.3
Exception 3. In part, that section reads ". . . the opening is protected
by a draft curtain and closely spaced sprinkles in accordance with NFPA 13."

The layout of closely spaced sprinkles is simple enough (NFPA 13 2010
section 8.15.4), but I'd like to verify the calculation requirements. NFPA
13 2010 sections 11.3.3.3 and 11.3.3.4 say to add the demand of the closely
spaced sprinklers to the demand of the ceiling sprinklers - i.e., include
both sets of operating sprinks in the same calc.

That's how I read it, anybody have a different interpretation?
