Don't agree if it's a Class I standpipe. There are two demands that should be
considered in a sprinklered building that is also furnished with standpipes -
the sprinkler demand and the standpipe demand. The next branch in the
decision tree is whether or not the standpipe system is automatic or manual.
Both 13 and 14 prescribe that we consider which demand is higher - sprinkler or
standpipe - and design our water supply for that service point, but not both
concurrently. However, if the standpipe is a manual one, then you would design
your automatic water supply for sprinklers only and prove that the FDC can
supply the system to the 100 PSI residual at the remote outlets, presuming it's
a Class I. If it's a Class II or III, then you would also have to account for
the automatic water supply of the Class II components if the building is
furnished with hose stations.

The foregoing is my opinion only and does not necessarily represent the opinion
or intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee on Standpipe and Hose Systems.

Not uncommon when you have a 100 psi remote outlet requirement on the standpipe
and the water supply can't deliver that. Install the pump on the standpipe
system to compensate for the deficiency.

Subject: 3 story building with standpipe and pump

Gentlemen,
I just toured a building with a standpipe and small booster pump in the closet
at the bottom of the service.

I have not seen this before and was hoping to get some general background on
this. Is it still installed today in some buildings, etc.

Thank you,
Joe
