Good morning Forumers: We had the exact same situation recently in Albuquerque 13/13'R' retro-fit of former Howard Johnson's Motel. We could not install dry HSW because of restricted distance between sliding doors and decks (two-story). Structures were non-combustible, all concrete and built like a bomb shelter. Our FPE reviewed the situation with Fire Marshal - no sprinklers required under the overhang. Season's greetings to All - my wife informs me Thanksgiving ornaments are going up in our local big-boxes here in Santa Fe...Feliz Navidad from Nurvo Mejico!! I have 13 and 13R buildings at a residential job that have narrow overhangs above some top floor balconies. The overhangs are scabbed on to the side of the building, and are not part of the roof. They range from 10’-0” to 13 ’-0” above the balconies. It is impossible to run wet pipe up to feed a dry sidewall below them. Are sprinklers required below these balconies? 8.15.7.1 tells me no. Also, IBC 903.3.1.2.1 also tells me no. I’ve uploaded a photo for reference. https://www.dropbox.com/s/sdhnlsi7vqnqzzh/IMG_5603.JPG?dl=0 James L.
