Brian:

We design AFSS for a LOT of schools projects but, since we're in California, my
answer may be contaminated by state amendments to the building code. That
said, the code in CA states that a Class III standpipe is required at each side
of any stage greater than 1,000 sq. ft. in area. There's also an exception
stating that if the building is fully sprinklered that at the designer's option
either a small hose connection per NFPA 13 or a Class II or III standpipe
connection per NFPA 14 may be installed. We find it's generally simpler and
saves a separate piping complement if we call them small hose connections. So
they're calculated as inside hose streams concurrent with the ordinary hazard
design area of the stage itself, which is invariably the most demanding in
theater arts and multi-purpose buildings on K-12 campuses. So add 50 gpm at
each connection to the main that supplies the hose connections and stage
sprinklers.

Subject: Hose Valves & Calc's

Quick question; finishing up a pretty big school project that has (2) 1-1/2"
hose valves located at the stage (really more of a raised platform typical in
schools) and my question is adding these valves to the calc's. Do I add the 50
gal for each valve in every remote area calc or only the remote area for the
stage calc's?
