I sent an email out on this issue sometime back, but it is probably time to
revisit the issue.

Simply put, email from AOL (and probably YAHOO) will not be processed by list
servers (like the Sprinkler Forum) and redistributed to members of an email
list. Period. Won’t happen. Nothing we can do about it. It’s not our fault, it
is the fault of AOL.

Read below for details.

The symptom…. You get email from a listserver (SprinklerForum, or any email
list processed by a listserver). You receive the email just fine. There are no
problems in receiving listerver mail by AOL accounts. However, if you try to
respond, your email from AOL (and probably YAHOO) will be treated as spam and
put in the spam bucket never to be seen again. This is because of the way that
AOL formats their email to prevent forwarding for spam purposes, but it
prevents forwarding by listservers also.

Listed below is a link describing this problem processing AOL email received by
listservers. This isn’t just a problem with AFSA, but with listservers
nationwide. And it isn’t a problem with email other that those received from
AOL or Yahoo. This is an AOL problem, not an AFSA problem, because of the way
they format their email. Please read the article at:

     http://tidbits.com/article/14843 <http://tidbits.com/article/14843>

You’ll note that they say:

"What can be done about this situation? Although email boffin John Levine has
compiled a list of things mailing list developers and administrators can do,
none are trivial and all have side effects. At the user level, there’s simply
nothing that can be done, other than those who use Yahoo and AOL voting with
their feet and switching to less-draconian free email providers like ...,
Gmail, and Outlook.com <http://outlook.com/>.”

We don’t own the software that provides our list services, so we can’t re-write
it. There is nothing we can do and the only solution is for the AOL user to get
another email account for list services like the SprinklerForum.

We have had this problem for about two years on the Sprinkler Forum and AOL
users have been made aware of the issue and suggestions to switch to another
provider for sending email to the Sprinkler Forum. We have very few AOL
addresses on the Sprinkler Forum and those subscribers don’t post messages.
However, because we are constantly getting new subscribers, it is prudent to
warn people before they attempt to post a message.

Have a great 4th of July weekend!
