A colleague has posed a question regarding proper testing of waterflow devices
in a 80+ story High Rise in Chicago. At a certain point in the building, the
systems installed reduce to a Class II standpipe only. The waterflow devices in
the building have, in the past, been tested with several hundred feet of garden
hose to slop sinks. This has worked. The question has been raised whether, due
to the lack of sprinklers, and the presence of hand hoses, shouldn't the
waterflow be induced at the 1-1/2" hand hose connection, possibly into a
testing tank. They haven't found any code reference regarding preference to
testing orifice size for this circumstance, and, I believe, if the device is
being successfully tested with an orifice not less than ½" this is acceptable.
Any thoughts or comments?
