Ladies/Gents:

We run into this situation ever so often and, if memory serves, we have
relied more than once on "water-curtain" test data/documentation from the Los
Angeles County (or) City Fire Department - Fire Prevention Division. You
might want to check it out as I think it has supporting documentation that
we have used successfully in the past with various Fire Marshals/AHJ's.

Todd,
I would be very careful. Is this a required separation or occupancy wall
and is it required to be fire-rated? If so, as far as I know there has
never been any full-scale testing of sprinklers as an equivalency to hourly
ratings of wall openings (except for window sprinklers). I know it is in the
IBC, loosely, but to evaluate it as an engineered equivalency is not
realistic.
System out of service for any reason? No protection.
Tread carefully if a wall rating is required. If not, it’s up to you and
your ingenuity.

Subject: Water curtain for wall opening

I have been asked to look at a situation in an industrial occupancy where
there are two garage -door size horizontal openings in a wall. The openings
cannot realistically be closed, so they are asking about a water curtain.
I have a couple of questions: First, NFPA 13 discusses water curtains
around vertical openings but not horizontal, from what i found. Am i missing
something?

Second, the ceiling is approximately 12 ft above the top of the openings.
The sprinklers need to be 12" from the deck max. Will that vertical
distance create an issue with the water curtain performance.
