Be very careful with classifying distilled alcohol as a Class II
flammable/Combustible liquid per NFPA 30. The building code has limits on what
can be in a general purpose warehouse and exceeding the Maximum Allowable
Quantities will place you in an H-3 occupancy where all kinds of requirements
come into play like secondary containment, HVAC ventilation rate requirements,
building separation, backup power, etc. Furthermore, NFPA 30 has repeated
verbiage stating within sections that it is not applicable for distilled
spirits. NFPA 30 is not an applicable standard for consumable alcohol. This is
where we lean to industry standards which apparently the AHJ is not accustomed
to dealing with.

The AHJ needs to understand that not every circumstance or occupancy use is
outlined nice and tidy within NFPA 13. Sorry, just isn't the case.

But, according to NFPA 13, alcoholic beverages with less than 20% alcohol in
wood containers is a Class II commodity.

For others, take a look at "Recommended Fire Protection Practices For Distilled
Spirits Beverage Facilities by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United
States" which is also referenced in XL GAPS Guidelines GAP.8.1.0.1 Barrel
Storage of Distilled Spirits.

xlcatlin.com Guideline
8.1.0.1<https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwix4Puwh7bcAhUCwYMKHWeqD4cQFjABegQIABAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fxlcatlin.com%2F-%2Fmedia%2Fgaps%2F8101___0.pdf&usg=AOvVaw30rnqlXQiYLVl_HJq5BNmQ>

That's about all you're going to find that is completely useable and
permissible by both the building and fire codes as well as NFPA as alternative
design or standard industry practice.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] RE: Alchol in Wooden Barrels

James,

I found there to be more issues with the storage of a Class II FCL then the
storage of the wooden barrels. At best it might be a Class III FCL (depends on
the proof). Dike sizes (containment) were a real problem on the proposed rack
house here and ended up killing the project. I was requiring sprinkler demand
for Class II FCL stored x-feet high on some type of rack. Never really got far
enough for a density number.

Subject: Alchol in Wooden Barrels

We have a medium size distillery that will be storing the alcohol in wooden
barrels to age, the barrels will be stored on multi-row racks to a height of
30'.

We had suggested the Distilled Spirits standard and the AHJ does not want to
accept it as a reference for the fire protection.

We have had a look in both NFPA #30 and FM data sheets and can find nothing
for the wooden barrels or the storage height.

Looking for other suggestions.

Thank you
