We see this a lot out here because of a generally higher level of scrutiny by the AHJ community and also because of seismic loading. Horizontal forces are trickier with any structure, but especially older buildings where the structure was designed to (sometimes much) earlier codes that didn't include adequate consideration for seismic reinforcement, if any. We have two state agencies that perform separate plan reviews for fire/life safety and structural and that process requires that the SEOR and fire protection system designer co-own the details and basis of design for hangers and bracing. We also get asked to do this occasionally on new construction in the private sector. There are two ways to convey to the AHJ that the SEOR has reviewed and accepted anchorage and loads; one or both methods are pretty standard practice in CA when it's required:
1. A letter, that need not be technical, stating that the SEOR has reviewed the fire sprinkler system design and finds that the structure will adequately support the pipe sizes and applied loads - both dead and shear - as proposed. 2. The SEOR can include details of FP hangers, bracing and anchorage in their drawings. We are doing this more and more; on the FP sheets we'll show a detail and then circle the anchorage with a tag that says, "See Detail 7/S-4.5" or similar. 3. The SEOR adds her/his stamp to the FP details, with a letter that states, "Accepted per details on FP 4.5" or similar. Steve L. I have done it both ways - get a letter rejected two or three times because the wording was wrong - and also calling them and asking exactly what it should say. The engineer on the project I am working on is asking for an example of what they letter should state. Does anyone happen to have an old letter or verbiage from a set of plans that I can take a look at? - Not my job, just trying to help a client out.
