R-1 Hotel, NFPA 13 system. Guest rooms have “closets” with VTAC units. If the space with the VTAC unit is in a space with an access panel is it considered a closet or a concealed space? Either way does this space require fire sprinkler protection? Non-combustible walls and ceiling. Space is 2’-4” x 3’-1” so it meets the criteria to have sprinklers omitted for closets from NFPA 13, 2013 8.15.8.2 but it isn’t a clothes or linen closet. Would I go to 8.15.1.2.2 where it is limited access and no storage?
Life Safety Code says that closets that contain equipment such as washers, dryers, furnaces, or water heaters shall be sprinklered, regardless of size. This section is only in New Apartment Buildings and not in New Hotels though. Anyone have a reference that makes it clear whether this space is to be protected or not? Thanks. Reed Roisum Reed A.
