Hi Tim, Substitute the word “Dry” for open or manual. The intent is to always use galvanized pipe in systems where water isn’t continuously present in the piping system. Open Spray Deluge Systems and Closed Head Manual Systems present these conditions. They are “Special Hazard “ fire protection systems commonly utilized in the petro-chemical, power generation, and vegetable oil extraction industry. Scot, chime in here and elaborate on the topic.

What is an open system? Deluge? What is a manual system? Fusible link or glass-bulb? These systems are not defined in NFPA 15 or 13. Is there an automatic system? Or other types of systems? The verbiage is confusing, any help is appreciated. Best, Timothy M. Easter, P.E. Fire Protection Engineer BAE Systems, Inc.
