I saw a couple of discussion chains about nail plates from 2009, but I thought I would check back in with the forum to see if there have been any new developments.
I recently came across a building inspector who says that the 3"x 5" nail plates we have been using do not meet code. The explanation that I received was essentially "since NFPA and IFC do not dictate the size of the nail plate - or even call out nail plates at all - , the IPC plumbing code is the automatic default (since both are dealing with plastic pipe CPVC/PVC), and therefore the guidelines of the IPC apply to CPVC fire sprinkler installations." I can't find that "code requirement" in any published documentation, and the code official did not indicate that such a fallback requirement was published anywhere. My position is that nail plates are a 'best practice' and the sizes are not dictated by the code for fire sprinkler systems. If they would like to use IPC as a guide, that is fine... but since they have only brought this up halfway through a job, why don't we leave the 3x5 plates installed since they don't actually violate the code. Their position is that the 3x5 plates are in violation of the building code since they don't meet the plumbing code and should be removed and replaced with 4" tall plates in accordance with IPC 305.6. Has anyone come across any documents or discussion on this topic recently? I have an informal interpretation request pending with ICC, but I don't get that back for four more days. Thanks! Matt
