Hi Everyone,

We are installing a dry-pipe attic system in a wood-framed apartment building.
The sub that is installing the lightning rod and its components has "bonded" to
our sprinkler pipe and I'm concerned that this is not per code or useful. It
almost seems like it could be creating a significant hazard for the sprinkler
system given that it is dry and the couplings have rubber gaskets. According to
the sub, the ground wire runs from the lighting rod all the way to the ground
and our pipe is simply tagged off that wire and is not in series with it. Has
anyone seen this done before or know why this is done and what code to
reference?
NFPA 13 (2016) Section 10.5.1.1 says that the underground may be grounded if a
grounding system is in place which is understandable. What I worry about is
that the lightning rod guy is using our pipe as a pathway to the ground...
which 10.5.1 says is a hard no. Additionally, our situation is with dry attic
pipe and not wet underground pipe.

Thanks!
