I would answer

“elevator control panel” is not an occupant on the building, so I don’t need
to take care of him, if he became an occupant then we will think about that

Sprinklers save lives…!

Ed,

Funny, I just had a plan review that stated this as well. This was the
comment, “Verify that sprinklers, as located in Elevator Lobbies, will not
spray elevator

controls located on elevator entrance door jambs”. There must have been a
seminar somewhere. I responded back that “It is the designed purpose of
sprinklers to spray the walls. There is no sprinkler designed that will not
spray the wall. If the elevator controls are an issue address it with the
electrical portion of the project”.

I haven’t heard back yet, but this was a first.

Thank you,

Subject: Elevators

Here’s a new one for me – guess I’m not old enough to have seen it all!

Got a call this morning from one of our foreman. An elevator inspector had
told him that our sprinkler (located in the ceiling of the hallway outside
the elevator) needed to be moved or plugged because it could wet the
elevator control panel. The elevator control panel is located in the door
frame of the 2nd floor elevator door (see below) and apparently isn’t water
resistant. I mostly live under a rock, but I do get out occasionally and
this is the 1st I’ve seen this type of elevator setup. So I expressed my
disagreement in pretty clear terms – compromising the sprinkler protection
in the hallway for the sake of an elevator panel is not an option.

Has anyone else run into this? Does the inspector have a legitimate
concern? Do any of the standards or codes give guidance on how this should
be addressed?

Returning to my rock,

Ed Kramer
