Multi-hydrant tests can be of great value when you have a conditions that
warrants a high flow rate. All to often the water purveyor or FD will go out
and flow one hydrant and then extrapolate a flow rate down to 20 psi which is
often used for the fire flow value.

One case where the multi-hydrant flow test became critical was for a project
with a large fire flow requirement. A typical single outlet, single hydrant
test was performed and they had about 700 actual gpm flowing and at 20 psi we
should be able to meet the fire flow demand. But the system test pressures
weren’t really that spectacular and I had my doubts so we requested a
multi-outlet, multi-hydrant test. Once we got the final results, the system
did not have the required flow.

So if you’re doing a job where it’s light hazard, the initial one-outlet, one
hydrant test might be fine, but if you have a high flow condition, insist on a
multi-point test to get more accurate results.

It’s not a bad thing to have for instructional purposes. It can emphasize that
higher flows give better results. It is shocking how consistent the accepted
model is.

Best.
