Water jet stream and water spray are terms in SDS documents typically referring
to the manual firefighting methods, i.e. Hand held hose lines and straight
stream-fog nozzle.

Water is the common control media for these types of rooms and depending on the
size of the room and quantity of material present, a deluge or closed head
water based system should be appropriate. If there is potential for a large
spill there are times when foam-water deluge is appropriate. You'll have to
assess what is suitable.

Also take note that an accidental release in hydraulic systems will atomize the
fluid into more of a gaseous state than a pure liquid state which drastically
changes the flash point and ignition point temperatures. It is not uncommon
for a Class III liquid that normally exists at ambient temperature and
atmospheric pressure to replicate a Class I material when released under
pressure and especially if at an elevated temperature. So don't skimp on the
design density.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] hydraulic pump for a material lift- Deluge sprinkler?

Can you use deluge sprinklers to cover a mechanical room that has a hydraulic
pump for a material lift?
It appears that water spray is a suitable extinguishing media but not a water
jet stream due to potentially scattering the oil and spreading fire.

Best,
Timothy M. Easter
