Tim,

If the whole building is one system, then naturally, every nozzle will be
flowing.

If the building is broken up into multiple systems it can get a bit trickier.
If there are large openings where combustion gases can freely flow from one
level to another, those communicating floors should be designed to flow
simultaneously.

You made a brief comment about "both buildings". There are building/fire code
directives on the minimal allowable distance between certain types/occupancy
categories of buildings. When those minimums cannot be met, other measures to
protect the buildings from fire exposure are required and are outlined within
the codes. I have run into conditions with hazardous buildings where the
sprinkler systems in both buildings were calculated as simultaneous flows due
to the level of fire hazard and likelihood of multiple building involvement due
to a lack of code compliant separation.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] deluge sprinkler

Which NFPA code and section describe a situation in the building with a deluge
system, that drive the requirement to flow all floors, both buildings
simultaneously? The floors have large openings between floors for equipment.
There are no walls separating different sections of a single floor.
