Google Laser Measuring devices. There are many choices.
I use a Leica Disto A5. It is light weight, fits in palm of your hand,
Rugged and runs on 2 - AA which last 1-2 years.

I've looked at Moasure & Meazor GPS based.
Looking for walls and structure surveying in addition to pipes.
