A.8.6.5.3.3 When obstructions are located more than 18in. below the sprinkler
deflector, an adequate spray pattern develops and obstructions up to and
including 4 ft. wide do not require additional protection underneath. Examples
are ducts, decks, open grate flooring, catwalks, cutting tables, overhead
doors, soffits, ceiling panels, and other similar obastrucitons.

I'd look at 8.6.5.2.1.3

Craig - this is a standard sprinkler in question, so the first figure I went to
is Figure 8.6.5.1.2 (a). Seeing as that this is not a light hazard area, Figure
8.6.5.2.2 would not apply. I then wanted to see if there was consensus that
section 8.6.5.3.1 could be considered since the obstruction is more than 18"
below the deflector, but after re-reading everything again, it would appear
that the only "out" I have is to try to have the obstruction equally spaced
between (2) lines as allowed for in 8.6.5.1.2 (2) since the ductwork does not
exceed 4'-0".

Here's a question, what did you find out in NFPA 13 when looking at the
specific obstruction rules for the type of sprinkler you are providing?
Determining if you have an obstruction problem isn't limited to just the
general >48" and 18" clearance rules.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [Sprinklerforum] Ductwork more than 18 inches below a
sprinkler line and less than 4'-0" in width

I have a situation in which there are two HVAC trunklines that are almost right
next to two of my sprinkler lines. However, I am hanging these lines up in the
bar joist space and the trunklines are a good 4'-0" below my lines (trunklines
are hanging well below the trusses) and the trunklines are NOT 4'-0" in width
(The max width is about 3'-2"). Since both HVAC lines are more than 18" below
the deflector and since neither exceeds 4'-0" in width, would they still be
considered obstructions ?
