Good afternoon all. I'm trying to help a contractor with an issue he is having
with an AHJ. I will say that this AHJ has been a challenge on many other
projects. He has had informal interpretations from NFSA and AFSA about other
issues and this AHJ just says they are all wrong and he is the only one that
sees how the standard is correctly interpreted. So, it is likely a mute point
to push another issue with them, but:

Is it permissible to install exposed CPVC in a mechanical closet of ±40 sq ft?
Light hazard, the piping can be installed exposed provided that certain
criteria are met with sprinklers, spacing, etc. The listings go on to state
that CPVC can be installed in ordinary hazard compartments of otherwise light
hazard buildings, etc.. This is just a weird project where it was much easier
to put a pendent sprinkler 6" off the wall than get a sidewall in the room.
The CPVC piping is exposed for about 6" going into the room. This AHJ is
having them rip it all out, cut out the drywall and drop down with a sidewall.
I believe they were pinned high in the adjoining room and couldn't readily drop
down to get the sidewall minimum distance down from the ceiling, or something
like that.
