Bob, that's an excellent reference.

The text of that section remains pretty much identical in the 2022 edition.  However there is annex material in that edition which reads "/For situations not meeting the conditions of//8.1.3.1.1 <https://link.nfpa.org/publications/13D/2022/chapters/8#ID00013D000219>//, sprinkler coverage should be determined in consultation with the manufacturer and the authority having jurisdiction as appropriate for the conditions/."

And you were spot on with the possible need to calculated more than 2 sprinklers in the compartment, as noted in A.10.2.4 of both editions.

sincerely,

13D has a section that states that it is permissible to use Residential sprinklers outside of their listings in circumstances like yours (see 8.1.3.1.2, 2016).  You may need to a four sprinkler calc instead of 2, if I remember correctly.

So I have a 13D residential project with a 12:12 pitch, beamed ceiling configuration. In the last beam pocket area there is a fireplace located below. It's literally impossible to place a sprinkler far enough away from the fire place per 13D's required spacing for both the ordinary or intermediate temperature sprinklers without violating the requirement to be within 36" vertically down from the peak. So it would seem I have to violate something in order to get this to work. I can either use a quick response 286F sprinkler which should cover the temperature issue but violate 13D's use of quick response sprinklers which only allows for very limited usage of such. Or I can violate the 36" down from peak requirement and use residential sprinklers for that bay. At least that's the way I see it.

Any recommendations on how to address this?
