If The client can't give you a description of what they plan to do within the
space, it would be in your best interest to just walk away. I've been dealing
with Special Hazard occupancies in industrial facilities for a long time.
There's not enough information in your description to just slap an NFPA 13
criteria on the spaces. There could be special enclosure protection, dust
collection system protection and who knows what else when you're dealing with
any type of manufacturing related to plastics.

I deal with new products all the time. We sign a non-disclosure with the owner
in order to get the required information. If they try to keep secrets from me,
the design goes to the ultimate maximum most expensive option available. $$$$$
gets their attention.

This kind of project needs to be looked at by a competent fire protection
"engineer" who has experience in these types of industrial environments.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [Sprinklerforum] Proprietary Product

Good afternoon, all-

We are currently working on a quote for a customer (Corning) who will be
installing an enclosed assembly line within an existing building. They can not
share with us what is being assembled due to copyright issues. The customer did
state that there will be fiber optic cables with PVC jackets, fiber optic cable
jumpers, HCL and ARIMID fibers, and ULTEM plastic involved in the assembly
line. Anyone have any suggestions on the occupancy classification? Would this
fall under plastics manufacturing (EH2) or electronics plant (OH1), or perhaps
something else? The plastic isn't being manufactured in the assembly line.
Thank you!
