We need to install a sprinkler system on the 5th floor of a 10 story building. Presently, none of the other areas of the building have fire sprinklers.
The building does have an existing standpipe system (2 - 4" risers). The 4" risers are interconnected by 6" pipe, which is connected to the existing FDC. NFPA-14 (2013) 7.6.2 requires that standpipe systems that are part of a combined system have 6" risers. We can't use the 7.6.3 exception since in our example the building is not fully sprinklered. Since the existing risers are 4" (and not the required 6"), I want to install a new, separate SP riser, and connect the SP riser to the existing 6" interconnection pipe in the cellar. This SP riser will feed the 5th floor sprinkler system. In this situation, am I permitted to use the existing FDC to feed both the SD and SP systems? ADAM LEVINE, P.E.
