In Portland, the make you do it. In my area we pipe it back to the break tank
because our water purveyor charges lots of money for using the water

Tom, good to hear you are still out there.

There are a lot of variables (like how long they do each flow, etc) that will
impact how much water is saved or used. I don’t think there is enough
consistency to make it viable. You would have to pick a time of flow and meter
the exact flow rate.

You also need to realize that the test is to evaluate if the pump is running at
capacity and not to give you numbers for design.

The most restrictive place I have been to for discharge is the Coast Guard
Academy in New London,CT. You can’t discharge on grass and only in to certain
drains. This is more of a problem for relief valves as both pumps have flow
meters going back into the suction. I’m not sure is these restrictions are true
at other military facilities because I haven’t been on other bases for work in
a while.

I’m looking for backup, for a claim I base, but can’t back up.
I’m wondering if anyone here has ever done a green points calculation for the
benefit of having a flow meter on a fire pump and rat racing back to suction
rather than waste. I’ve heard many talking of this and how conscious they are
in our effort to save water but I’m wondering if anyone has ever submitted
applications, calculated savings, or presented evidence. I’d also be
interested in local or regional purveyor requirements on waste, reclamation and
disposal.
Go Red Sox.
