Jackie,

There was an excellent presentation on this topic at the AFSA convention
last month. I believe the answer to your question can vary slightly
depending on which version of NFPA 13 you are using. One of the most
pertinent sections is the definition of multiple row racking. As long as
you are meeting the definition of multiple row racking (keeping in mind
that you probably don't have transverse flue spaces) and you select a
protection scheme that covers multiple row racking with no transverse flue
spaces, then you would be meeting NFPA 13 requirements. There should be
multiple options for this, with ESFR usually being the most cost effective,
in my limited experience (I have only dealt with this in taller
configurations).

The bigger issue, which was discussed at the convention, is that some of
the allowed designs in NFPA 13 are probably not adequate and will result in
a potentially out of control fire/total loss. One of the most important
factors is the depth of the rack, which you indicated as 36 feet. In most
(all?) of the full scale fire testing that was done, fire spread along the
entire depth of the rack, due seemingly to the lack of transverse flue
spaces. Therefore, limiting the depth of the rack so that the fire is more
easily contained and does not activate all the sprinklers in the building
is probably crucial. I believe FM requires this dimension to be limited to
20 feet, but please double check me on that.

I'm not an expert on this, so hopefully someone smarter than me will chime
in and correct me where I'm wrong.

Thanks,
Skyler Bilbo
